European council adopted new battery regulation

The European Council has finally adopted the new Battery Regulation on the 10th of July 2023. This regulation will (partly) replace the existing Battery Directive and aims to regulate the entire life cycle of batteries, from production to recycling.

All types of batteries

While currently battery legislation is mostly aimed at portable, industrial and automotive batteries (as all Pincvision customers will be very well aware of), the regulation introduces new classification and includes all types of batteries: all waste portable batteries, electric vehicle batteries, industrial batteries, starting, lightning and ignition (SLI) batteries (used mostly for vehicles and machinery) and batteries for light means of transport (e.g. electric bikes, e-mopeds, e-scooters).

Further changes

Furthermore, a lot of new legislations are introduced. Smaller changes like new targets are introduced (for example mandatory minimum levels of recycled content and new waste collection targets) for all of the EU Member States. Also bigger changes like the demand that all portable batteries incorporated into appliances should be removable and replaceable by the end-user of the product as well as strict labelling information from 2026 and onwards.

We will surely stay on top of new developments and help you wherever we can in order for you to stay compliant with such new legislations!
