More and more countries are introducing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) obligations for batteries. If your organisation places batteries on the market, either as standalone units or integrated in products, you may be legally required to register, report and contribute to recycling schemes. These obligations vary significantly per country and can therefore be really complex to manage. We'll explain:
What is Battery Reporting?
Battery Reporting is part of the broader Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework. As a producer or importer, you're required to provide detailed information about the batteries you place on the market, including:
- Battery type and weight
- Intended use (e.g. consumer, industrial, automotive)
- Countries where the batteries are marketed
In many countries, registration with national authorities or at PRO's (Producer Responsibility Organization) is also mandatory.
But what does this mean for you?
If you've been reading this far, I think it is fair to assume that you think you might have obligations.
This is what's expected of you, if you are obligated. You need to:
- Register with national authorities or collective compliance schemes.
- Classify batteries by type, use and weight.
- Monitor sales volumes per country.
- Submit periodic reports (e.g. quarterly or annually).
- Pay applicable recycling or compliance fees.
- Keep clear records for audits or inspections.
Again: each country has its own rules. Staying on top of them all is really, really important.
