Sweden temporarily reduces VAT rate on food

The Swedish government has announced a temporary reduction of the VAT rate on most food products, lowering the rate from 12% to 6%. The measure will apply from April 1, 2026, until December 31, 2027 and aims to help households cope with ongoing inflation and rising living costs.

The reduced VAT rate will apply to most food products as well as bottled water. Alcoholic beverages are excluded from the measure and will remain subject to the current VAT rate.

For businesses operating in or selling to Sweden, this change may impact pricing, invoicing, and VAT reporting processes. Companies should ensure their systems and tax configurations are updated in time to apply the new VAT rate correctly from April 2026.

The measure is temporary and is scheduled to end at the close of 2027, after which the VAT rate on food is expected to return to its previous rate.
