In the United Kingdom the Environment Agency (EA) has made some important changes which will affect online marketplaces of B2C electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) in the UK as from 2026.
What has changed?
Online marketplaces will face several new obligations regarding Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) for their overseas sellers and will need to:
- Join an approved WEEE compliance scheme
- Pay registration fees to relevant regulators
- Report data on equipment placed on the UK market by overseas sellers
- Contribute to collection and treatment costs
What will be the impact on B2C Producers?
These changes will likely result in increased responsibilities and costs for B2C producers of EEE in the UK. Producers should consider:
- Reviewing and updating their WEEE compliance strategies
- Preparing for potential increases in compliance costs
- Enhancing product design to improve recyclability and durability
- Improving consumer communication regarding recycling options
Why the change?
These changes aim to create a more level playing field between different retail channels and ensure that online marketplaces take responsibility for WEEE arising from their platforms. The full implementation of these new obligations is expected to come into force in 2026.
