Kenya Requires Certificate of Origin for All Imports from July 1, 2025

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has announced that effective July 1, 2025, all consignments imported into Kenya must be accompanied by a valid Certificate of Origin (COO) issued by a competent authority in the exporting country.

This requirement is in accordance with Section 44A of the Tax Procedures Act, CAP 469B, as amended by the Finance Act, 2025.

To ensure smooth clearance of your goods, it is advised to:

  1. Include a valid COO with every shipment to Kenya
  2. Verify that the COO includes the following details;
  • Name and address of the exporter and importer
  • Port of origin
  • Description and quantity of the goods
  • Country of origin
  • Issuing authority

The KRA has granted a transition period until September 30, 2025. After this date, shipments without a valid COO may be subject to seizure or forfeiture.
