The Eco-design for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which entered into force on 18 July 2024, is the cornerstone of the EU’s approach to more environmentally sustainable and circular products.
The ESPR is part of a package of measures that are central to achieving the objectives of the 2020 Circular Economy Action Plan. They will contribute to helping the EU reach its environmental and climate goals, and to achieving its energy efficiency targets by 2030. The Circular Economy action plan focusses on field that use a high amount of resources, such as electronics and ICT, batteries and vehicles, packaging, plastics, textiles, construction and buildings, food, water and nutrients.
The ESPR contains a number of other new measures in relation to the previous Eco-design Directive 2009/125/EC, like:
- a Digital Product Passport (DPP); an QR code which should elaborate on the supply chain movements, product information as well as compliance and labeling aspects related to the good.
- Rules to address destruction of unsold consumer products; a ban on the destruction of unsold textile and footwear items; other sectors will follow.
- Green Public Procurement; the procurement and/or usage of goods and services with a lower environmental impact.
To give more clarity about the ESPR, the EU published a FAQ, which can be found here.
