What does this mean for you as a Battery Producer?
For battery producers, August 18, 2025, is a significant date, as several important obligations become applicable from this point onwards, primarily relating to Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
Producers must register in each EU Member State where they make batteries available on the market for the first time.
What will be the impact on Battery Producers?
Key obligation impacts include:
- Mandatory registration in each EU Member State where you operate,
- Financial responsibility for waste battery management,
- Compliance with specific labelling requirements, especially for separate waste management
- Introduction of new battery categories (portable, industrial, automotive, electric vehicle (EV), and light means of transport (LMT) batteries).
Each category has specific requirements and regulations. - Labelling and information to end-users and distributors: Producers must provide clear information and labelling, as well as separate collection symbols (crossed-out wheeled bin) to end-users and distributors on the prevention and management of battery waste.
Why the change?
The new EU Battery Regulation marks the significant shift in Europe's approach to sustainable products. It introduces a comprehensive lifecycle framework, overseeing every stage of battery production, from the initial manufacturing to their use, collection, reuse, and ultimately, recycling. This regulation ushers in a new era of producer responsibility, making sustainability a core focus throughout a battery's entire journey.
