Germany’s voluntary eInvoicing momentum builds ahead of 2027 mandate

Germany’s move toward mandatory B2B eInvoicing is entering a new and important phase. While the legal obligation for suppliers to send electronic invoices only starts in 2027, German businesses have already been allowed to issue e-invoices since January 2025.

It seemed adoption in 2025 remained limited, but the signals for 2026 are changing.

Voluntary adoption is accelerating

More suppliers are now informing their customers that they intend to start sending e-invoices voluntarily, even though they are not yet legally required to do so. As a result, companies operating in Germany already need to be able to receive structured e-invoices.

This readiness requirement is often underestimated. The mandate may still be a year away, but the operational impact is already being felt.

What we see in practice

Several of our clients are receiving more frequent communication from suppliers announcing their transition to e-invoicing, triggering internal discussions around IT readiness and VAT compliance.

The key message for 2026 is clear: Even without a formal mandate, your organization must be ready to receive e-invoices.

Early adoption by suppliers will continue to accelerate throughout the year. Organizations that are not yet technically prepared may face operational disruptions.
