Objectives
The PPWR is implemented with one general goal: all packaging on the European market is to be reusable or recyclable by 2030. Prevention of packaging and the increase in the quality of recycled materials are measures implemented to achieve this goal for all types of packaging.
Sub-measurements
In order to achieve the goal, the regulation implements the following aspects which will influence the packaging placed on the market:
- Restricting over-packaging and certain forms of unnecessary packaging and supporting reuse and refill systems: Packaging featuring double walls, false bottoms, and over 40% empty space requires redesigning to minimize packaging waste.
- Minimum inclusion rates for recycled content in plastic packaging.
- Mandatory deposit return systems for plastic bottles and aluminum cans.
- Harmonized labeling of packaging and waste bins to facilitate correct consumer disposal of packaging waste: The packaging is to be labeled with information on packaging reusability and a QR-Code informing the customer of several aspects, for example, the collection points.
How does this influence producers?
All producers are to comply with the new packaging regulation. This means that packaging needs to be evaluated and adjusted where needed. In case you are a reseller, you must notify the (foreign) producer of the requirements.
