Double-digit nature of transaction codes mandatory in Ireland

In the beginning of this year, several changes regarding the Intrastat modernization plan of 2022 were implemented in the Intrastat reporting. One of them was concerning the new nature of transaction codes.

Under European legislation COMMISSION IMPLEMENTING REGULATION (EU) 2020/1197 that applies to all EU Member States, it is stated that the Nature of Transaction codes filed in the Intrastat declarations will be switching from single digit to double digit. This change was implemented as of January 2022 within the EU. However, the only exception was made in Ireland where nature of transaction codes has been accepted in both single digit and double-digit format for both dispatches and arrivals.

As of January 1, 2023, submission of double-digit Nature of Transaction codes will be mandatory for all dispatches in Ireland. For arrivals, the use of double-digit Nature of Transaction codes will remain optional.

The ROS filing system (system that is used for filing Intrastat in Ireland) will be updated to allow for these changes and it is strongly recommended that you prepare for these changes as soon as possible.

The current nature of transaction codes that are used as of 2022 are defined in EU Regulation 2020/1197 in Annex I, Part C for the classifications.71. Here you can find an overview.
