Valpak has opened the fourth phase of the WEEE Distributor Takeback Scheme (DTS)
British producer compliance scheme Valpak has opened registration for the fourth phase of the WEEE DTS. Valpak manages this program for the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA). Retailers can register until 31 January for the scheme which will run until 31 December 2019.
Money that is raised through retailers that sign up to the scheme will be put into a fund. The size of the fund will be dependent on the number of retailers rejoining the scheme as part of their obligation under the WEEE. Valpak estimates this will be worth £500.000 to £600.000 over the three years.
Local authorities are able to bid for the fund. The fund needs to be used for WEEE projects that aim to increase the rate of WEEE collection, reuse and recycling in the UK. Approval of funding projects are considered by a panel of representatives with different backgrounds: representatives from the DEFRA, circular economy experts, retailer specialists and representatives of local authorities in the devolved administrations.
