The EU Battery directive first collection target will become a challenge

Recently, the EBRA (European Battery Recycling Association) presentend its statistics for the year 2010. The total tonnage of batteries collected in 2010 is 42047.

The first collection target from the Battery Directive is 25% in 2012. The EBRA concluded that some Member States are still far away from achieving this rate. The UK is far behind in reaching the target with a collection rate of 10% in 2009. The Netherlands is right on track with a collection rate of 42% in 2010, which even makes it possible to achieve the collection target of 45% in 2016. The collection target must be calculated from the average amount of batteries placed on the market in the three preceding years.
